How being a Parent can Affect Anxiety Levels
(419 Words)
Anxiety levels can be affected greatly when one becomes a parent. This will range based on the person, the child and the particular situation.
You will have someone else about which to worry
Many people experience escalated anxiety levels when they become a parent. Suddenly you have a new life for which you are responsible, a life that you probably love more than your own. You may worry about every little thing with them. Many parents describe it as suddenly having their heart outside of their body. You want to keep your child safe, and there are so many things that you cannot control. You may worry about them getting sick, getting hurt or branching out. As they age, the focus of your concerns may changed, to be replaced by new issues such as their dealing with the rigors of being a teenager and peer pressure. Many parents face anxiety about children even when they are adults.
Having a child can be stressful
A child is wonderful and fantastic and brings all sorts of wonderful feelings to a person, but they can be trying as well. They can destroy the newly cleaned house or break your favorite vase. Many people can get anxious when faced with disorder in their once ordered lives.
When you have children, your plate suddenly becomes much more full. You may now be juggling more responsibilities than ever before, and this will manifest itself in many people in increased anxiety.
If there are issues, then your anxiety may be far higher
Some children are far easier – or more difficult- than others. If you have a child that faces medical difficulties, for instance, then your anxiety level may rise significantly. If your child has behavioral or other issues, then it may also go up.
As much as possible, it is important to control your anxiety, even in the face of the new challenges that becoming a parent entails. Your children may be able to sense the anxiety, and they will learn to behave partly through your behaviors. Knowing this, some parents may strive to lower their anxiety through helpful means such as reading a self-help book or seeing a counselor. In this way, parenthood may then indirectly cause them to feel less anxiety because it spurred them to take the steps to lower it.
Being a parent and anxiety come hand in hand for some people. Understand the ways that it can affect you so that you can control it and not the other way around.
