Many have been affected by the bad economy in 2010. Even Christmas can be affected by these difficult times.
Many people may not take vacations this year
A lot of people typically travel during the Christmas holiday. They may go to visit family or they may go on a special family vacation. Vacations are expensive, however, and a lot of people are simply not going to have the money this year to spend on one. When an economy goes sour, these sorts of luxuries are often the first to go and the fact that it is Christmas will not change this. Some people may try to work more in order to earn extra money and may not be able to go because of that. Some people may not cancel their vacation altogether, but they may scale back or do less expensive vacations. They may try to stay in cheaper lodgings.
You may see fewer parties
A lot of people have Christmas parities. These can be very pricey, however, and cost hundreds of dollars or even into the thousands. Some people may decide not to do a party because they do not want to spend the money. They may simply not have the funds or they may want to save just in case they need it later such as if someone loses their job. If they do have a party they may scale back in the guest list, food or other aspects of the party.
People may be emotionally affected
A lot of people suffer from stress because of the difficult economy, especially if someone has lost their job, if they are facing foreclosure or if they are personally struggling. They may not feel like they are in as much of the Christmas spirit and may not put as much effort into it.
Shopping and gifts may be affected
A lot of people will have to cut down on their gifts during the difficult economy. They may have less of a budget to spend, and look for less expensive items. They may try more creative and yet cheaper methods such as giving a handmade gift. Groups might also do something like a white elephant gift exchange in order to cut down on the amount every individual person needs to spend.
The bad economy of 2010 can affect everything, including Christmas. The above points highlight some of the ways that this holiday may be affected.
