How to Arrange your Christmas Outings so that you don’t Drink and Drive

(421 Words)
Drinking and driving can cost you your car, your freedom and your very life. You do not want to destroy your Christmas by drinking and driving. With effort, you can arrange your Christmas outings so that you do not get behind the wheel while inebriated.
Make a designated driver for every outing
If you will be attending Christmas outings with a friend or family member such as your spouse, then specifically arrange for a designated driver. If you both like to drink, then you can take turns for different outings. Whoever is the designated driver needs to make certain not to drink or at least to remain sober enough to drive. By planning this in advance, you will avoid getting stuck at a Christmas celebration or taking to the roads when you are drunk.
Work out how many drinks you can have
If you wish to drink at your Christmas outing, then you can work out how much that you can safely drink. Although many people think of the number .08, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) reports that you can find some effects like judgment loss and visual function decline even with a .02 blood alcohol concentration level. If you can, avoid drinking altogether at the Christmas events if you will be driving. If you must drink, then make sure that your blood alcohol level stays under the legal limit. You can help yourself by drinking earlier in the event so that you will have time to sober up.
Look for other ways to get to outings
Public transportation can allow you to enjoy your Christmas outings without needing to worry about getting behind the wheel of a car. You may be able to walk to some outings as well. Of course, you still may want to avoid getting too drunk if you will be out and about.
Consider staying at someone’s home
If your Christmas outing is a party at a family member or close friend’s home, then you may be able to stay there after the party so that you can drink and not have to worry about going home. Of course, make these plans in advance so that you do not inconvenience your friend. If they are comfortable with it, then you may be able to take a spare bedroom or couch. Of course, return the favor to them.
The consequences of drinking and driving can destroy a life forever. Take whatever steps necessary to make sure that you only drive sober to and from your Christmas outings.
