It is difficult to resist all of the sumptuous food offered during the holiday time. For many the holidays are all about eating, but your waistline may pay the price. Try the following tactics to avoid holiday pounds.
Take very small portions
You are probably accustomed to taking certain sized portions at every meal. The problem is that during the holiday meals, you may have many more choices of food. You may go to a dinner that has not two side dishes but ten. All of a sudden, your normal sized portions leave you with far too much food. It is certainly okay to try everything, but if you do, you should take extremely tiny servings. Remember that you can always take more if there is something that you particularly like.
At some meals, the host will serve. They often give too much. You can tell them that you are watching your food intake and ask to take your own portions.
You do not have to eat everything on your plate
It may have been drilled into you since you were a child that you need to completely clean your plate. Doing so can help you gain those holiday pounds. If you find that you are full then ask if you can take a doggie bag home.
Be careful with those delicious holiday drinks
You may love the eggnog, but that does not mean that it loves you. You may carefully consider what you eat during the holiday season, but you can drink those pounds on as well. Many of the holiday drinks have a lot of sugar, and you can get a lot of extra calories that way. In addition, many people drink alcohol at holiday parties. Alcohol can have a lot of calories as well, so you should watch your intake of those drinks.
Choose healthier options at the tables
You are likely to have many choices at your holiday tables. You may be tempted to take as much of the unhealthy food as possible, but you will probably gain weight. You should look at the healthier choices. For instance, do not take as much of the main red meat but instead have some of the vegetables. If you are cooking then look for healthier recipes. For instance, you can have steamed and seasoned spinach instead of creamed spinach.
Many people gain weight during the holidays, but you do not need to be one of them. The above tips can help you avoid those pounds.
