A lot of people overspend on food. At a time when many are in financial difficulties, it is important to be aware of these issues that that they may make wise spending decisions in the future.
They shop while they are hungry
Some people overspend because they are not in the right state for grocery shopping. You should not be starving if you are shopping. If you are, then everything may look appetizing and you may throw things in your cart because of your stomach and not your brain. You may not make wise decisions.
You are not properly prepared
You should prepare for each and every grocery store trip. Making a list can help you from overspending. You should look in your house first so that you know what you already have. A lot of people overspend on food that they already have because they did not check first. Also, a list can help you stick to the things that you need to buy.
You do not look for sales/coupons/deals
There are many specials at grocery stores. For instance, oftentimes grocery stores such as Publix offer deals that allow you to get one free with one purchase. If you are not paying attention, then you may just buy one of these and miss out on the free one. Also, they may offer a different size on sale and you may overspend on the one that is regular price. There may be coupons, sometimes even available in flyers at the store, of which you should take advantage.
You impulse buy without thinking about whether you will use it
There are a lot of impulse grocery shoppers out there. You see something you like and you throw it in your cart without thinking about whether you will actually use it. Oftentimes people buy too many of the same items such as bread. For instance, you may only buy one loaf of bread but then if you add bagels, pita and other bread items, you may end up overspending on items you will just throw away.
Sometimes people overspend because they are trying to get a good deal but not using reason. For instance, perhaps you buy a bigger size because you see that it is less per ounce with the bigger size. However if you are just going to throw out a decent portion of it because you do not need that much then you have just overspent.
Even if you only overspend a little during each visit to the grocery store, it can add up since it is a recurring cost. You should address any of the above factors that affect you.
