: How to Calculate how much you can Afford on a new Car
:
(414 Words)
So you want a new car, but you are not sure of exactly what you can afford. Consider the following methods to calculate this number.
First get an understanding of the pricing of cars. If you have exactly $20,000 to spend on a new car, that doesn’t mean that you can go out and buy a car that has a sticker price of $20,000. Remember that you must also add different fees to the car. Think about any features or extras you will want. Even tax can add up when you are talking about this much money. Make sure that you consider all of these extra costs or you will not truly be able to afford the car.
Are you planning on buying it outright?
It can be very wise to only buy a car that you can afford outright. Of course for many of us this is not possible, but if it is it can have advantages. First it means that you will know how much cash you actually have. When deciding how much of your cash can go for a car, think about how much you will need for other items. Don’t forget that sometimes large and sudden costs can pop up such as if you suddenly need a new roof, have a car accident or have some sort of medical emergency that drains your finances. Also, with people being laid off so much you do not want to put yourself in a position that you would not be able to pay your rent or mortgage immediately.
Make a budget to calculate money for car payments
If you are going to make payments then you will need to know the maximum payment amount and you will need to consider a down payment as well. You should make yourself a budget if you do not already have one. It should be realistic. You do not want to put what you think you should be spending but in actuality you spend twice as much and can’t afford the car you think you can. You should also consider that there is a great chance that your car insurance will go up if you buy a new car that is worth a lot more than your old car.
When you do go to the dealership be firm. If you know that you have so much to spend, then do not overspend and then get into trouble. Consider the above tactics to determine what you can afford.
