When you receive poor customer service from a small business, you may want to complain. The following are tips for doing so.
Ask to speak to the manager
You will want to speak to someone in charge. Speaking to another employee may not do anything if they are lateral with the person who gave you the poor customer service. In some small businesses, the manager will actually be the owner of the business.
Calmly explain what happened
You do not want to just charge in there screaming and yelling. In a small business, sometimes people are like family (or even are family!) You do not want to call them names or just start accusing. Instead you should stay calm, and explain exactly what the problem was. Go into as much detail as possible in explaining why the customer service was so poor.
You want to explain exactly why you are upset and how you feel. You want the manager to feel empathy. You can ask how he or she would feel in your shoes. You can also see if they feel that this is the type of service that they like to provide.
You can then talk about what you want to happen. Don’t demand. Remember that in a small business there might not be anywhere else for you to go to if they do not agree with you, so you will want to make as compelling a case there. You might want to avoid threatening because a lot of people immediately get defensive at that point and will not listen to anything that you say, no matter how reasonable. If the situation is obvious then they may offer you something such as a coupon. You can also inquire about how you will be treated in the future and whether they will do anything to talk to the person who gave you the poor customer service.
If you do not get anywhere with the company you can also take your complaint to a different organization such as the Better Business Bureau. There are different types of complaints that they handle so you can see if they can accommodate yours. When you make a complaint through them, then they may make a better effort to handle your complaint satisfactorily.
In some cases, you will be able to go a little higher in a small business, so if the manager does not help you can inquire about someone further up the line.
