The right classroom ambiance can go a long way in promoting learning. Consider the following ways in which to create this ambiance.
Decorate the walls with items related to the classroom theme
If you have a chemistry classroom, then you can put up a picture of the periodic table. In a history classroom, you can put up pictures of famous battles or events like the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In pretty much every subject you will find posters that are usually inexpensive to buy and can get the children interested in learning. You can put up information that could be used as a reference for the children (although nothing that will give away the answers to tests!) You can also put up exemplary work by the children. You want the children to look around and feel surrounded by the subject. Also to keep in interesting you should constantly change the wall hangings so that there are new things that can teach them. A rotating bulletin board can be very useful as well.
The classroom should be quiet (or filled with the right kind of noise)
You want the atmosphere of the classroom to be serious and inductive to learning. You might want to keep the door closed so that you do not hear other classrooms or the people passing outside. Keep the room quiet except for discussion related to the subject. Of course if you want to have an exciting class debate or brainstorming session, then that can be great.
Keep the classroom tidy
It can be difficult for the students to learn if the classroom is a mess. You will want to make sure that your own desk is neat and organized so that you set a good example for the students. Encourage them to keep their areas tidy as well. Messes should be cleaned up right away.
Place in other items that are related to the subject matter
You want the students to really feel like they are in the subject. You may be able to get classroom props. For instance, if it is a biology class you might be able to get some models of the human body. If it is a history class perhaps you can get some relics such as old coins. If it is a science classroom, then you can have objects like microscopes and test tubes. Be creative.
The right classroom ambiance can help the children learn in a comfortable environment. The above tips can help you produce the environment that is right for your learning institution.
