First you will want to get a handle on how much space you have. Many sure that you know all of your measurements, because you want to be able to fit everything in right.
Next you will want to think about the essentials that you need. What is important to you? Do you need a lot of counter space? Do you want an island? Do you want a booth or a table and chairs so that you have an eat-in kitchen? Also, you will want to think very hard about cabinet space.

You will find a wealth of information on the Internet that shows designs and there are even some computer programs that allow you to do it as well, which might be able to give you a feel for it. You can think about the other kitchens that you have been in, and you can try to emulate one of those if you like.
Think about the materials. You will have many choices of cabinetry, appliances and other items. You can make things from wood, metals, granite and many other materials. Each has a different look and they cost very different amounts of money.
