: Easy Ways to Cut Energy Expenditure

(415 Words)
Cutting your energy expenditure can save you money and help the environment. Consider the following tips to find easy strategies to save.
Purchase more energy-efficient appliances
There are many appliances like washing machines, dryers, water heaters, dishwashers and more that are more energy efficient. These can save you hundreds of dollars in your energy bills and literally pay for themselves well within their lifetimes. They may use less hot water such as in the case of a front loading washing machine. People hang on to their very old machines thinking they are saving money but in reality making the purchase may actually save them instead.
Save money on air conditioning and heating costs
A large part of many households’ energy expenditures is for the air conditioning and heating costs. Many people have the air conditioning and heating going full steam even when they are not home. If you are not going to be home then you should turn them down as much as possible without endangering pets, medications, etc. If it is a nice day outside, then consider opening the windows instead. Also consider if you really need it at the temperature that you have it set for. Sometimes people will be just as comfortable if it is set a degree or two different. If it is the winter and you have the heat on very strong, then perhaps you can just dress a little warmer. You may get used to the new temperature quickly.
Think about whether you need to use all of the electricity
Instead of using the dryer many times for a lot of loads, see if you can consolidate some of them into bigger loads. Even better, if it is just a few items, then let them dry on a line or a drying rack. Even small measures such as using an manual can opener instead of an electric one can add up over time.
Turn off the lights!
There are many households that have lights on all the time, whether people are in the rooms or not. When you leave, then shut off that switch!
Do not leave on electrical items that you are not using
Do not have the television playing when no one is in the room. Turn off your computer if you are going out for a while. Even unplugging items can help as well.
Using less energy is better for you, your pocketbook and the environment. The above tips contain strategies to help you accomplish this.
