How to Enjoy the Office Christmas Party and Maintain your Professional Reputation
(403 Words)
Enjoying your office Christmas party and maintain your professional reputation may seem like conflicting goals, but they certainly do not need to be. The following steps can help you maintain a balance at your work holiday festivities.
You can drink but do not get drunk
Many office parties have the alcohol freely flowing. Of course you may want to have a few drinks. If you drink too much however, then you may do something that is inappropriate. You may say something to your boss that you should not have. Not only can it ruin your reputation but it can even get you fired. Make sure that you are aware of the limit that you can have, which will allow yourself to have a nice time but still stay in control. Make sure that you also have enough that you can still legally drive if you will be driving home. You will lose many people’s respect (and possibly kill someone) if you drive while intoxicated.
Be friendly with people without getting too friendly
Do not be afraid to talk to people at your work party. You should talk about things other than work! Let loose and have fun. On the other hand, you should remember that you are with your co-workers and superiors. There are still things that you should not say that you would say to your friends. You may want to avoid saying anything suggestive to a member of the opposite sex, for instance. The work office party is not the place to hit on anyone. You can still joke around with people and have fun with those around you.
Join in on the fun, but do not instigate too much
If others are dancing in a fun rendition of Thriller, then go for it. If everyone else is enjoying an elegant meal, then do not jump on the table and start dancing, however. You want to take your cues from others at the office party if you are not sure of the boundaries. If everyone is joining in on something silly, then no one will blame you for enjoying it too. Be careful about instigating some outrageous behavior, however, because it could gain you a reputation you do not want.
The office work party should be a lot of fun. Have a good time and let loose but realize the boundaries. You want to both enjoy yourself and keep your reputation.
