How to help Children Adjust to a new School

Adjusting to a new school can be difficult for a child. Different steps allow you to help your child in this move.
Encourage your children to make friends
Your children may have an easier time at his or her new school if they make friends. Talk to your child about this. You can also help your child make play dates. Tell your child that they can ask a friend over from school or contact other parents if the child is young. Your child will hopefully start to feel like he or she belongs.
Go to school functions
Many schools have various functions throughout the year. Going to these may help your child to feel more involved with the school. He or she will meet more people. It is nice to support the school, and the other students may be appreciative.
Work with their teachers
If your child is young, you can talk to the teacher and together work on ways for your child to adjust. You want to go to them in a timely fashion if your child is having any difficulty adjusting. They may be able to put your child in constructive work groups or sit him or her near a friendly student.
Encourage him or her to join school groups
Schools of all different levels have groups that may help your child adjust. For instance, he or she can join the drama club. They can join an art club. This may also help him or her make more friends.
Be available for your child to talk
If your child is having problems adjusting to his or her new school you want them to know that they can come to you. Listen to his or her concerns and try to reassure them. You can give them tips on certain issues. For instance, if they are feeling shy and not approaching other kids to make friends, then you can coach them on how to do this.
A new school can be a big challenge for kids. You want to keep abreast of how they are doing at all times. If a problem starts to occur such as if their grades slip from what they were at their old school, then you want to address it right away so that the situation does not have time to worsen. Otherwise the approaches above may help you assist them with their new school.
