(504 Words)
Day after day you sleep on your mattress, and after time it begins to get wear and tear. This can happen ever so slowly over the years, and it can be difficult to figure out when exactly you should replace your mattress. According to Consumer Reports, a good mattress can last ten years if you take proper care of it. Look at the following points to help you decide when you should replace your mattress.
You should feel comfortable and well rested after you wake up. If you are always feeling exhausted when you wake up or that your back or other areas hurt, then it may be the mattress. An old mattress that is not supporting as it should can cause these problems. Obviously, other things can cause these problems as well, so you might want to try sleeping on another mattress to see if it just occurs on your mattress. You should not sleep better on a hotel mattress.
Of course, you want to make sure that you feel comfortable while lying down on the mattress. No matter how much great sleep you get, if you simply do not feel good on the mattress, then you should get a new one.
Examine your mattress. Is it sagging in the middle? Many mattresses will start to sag as time goes on. If you feel like you’re sleeping in a valley, that it may be time to replace your mattress. This can be especially difficult when you are sharing the mattress with a spouse because you may have difficulty giving each other enough room if you are both being pulled toward the center.
You should also look for lumps in the mattress. It will probably not be comfortable if you’re sleeping on a lot of lumps and it may not be healthy for you.
Some people recommend changing the mattress every 5 to 7 years, especially for those who are over 40 years old. It may have more of an effect on you as you mature.
There are things that you can do in order to help your mattress last longer. Your kids may love to jump up and down on your mattress, but this can wear it out. Do not let them jump on it. It is also very important to rotate your mattress. Some people have a mattress that can only go up one way, such as a pillow-top mattress. For these, rotate it by switching the part that is at the foot of the bed to the head of the bed. If you have a mattress that can also be flipped over, then you should both rotate it and turn it over. This should happen biweekly for three months after you purchase it, and then bimonthly after that. You can also increase the mattress’ life by getting a frame that offers support in the center.
You want to enjoy your mattress. You may be amazed at the difference when you change to a new one after yours has gotten too old.
