How to Make an Interactive Bulletin Board for a Classroom

(405 Words)
When students actively participate in learning, then they may be much more likely to absorb and retain the information. Bulletin boards are utilized in a variety of different classrooms, and certain techniques can make them interactive and more valuable for students.
Create flaps with hidden images or words
You can turn your bulletin board into a “lift-the-flap” experience. For instance, you can have questions on the board and the answer hidden behind the flap. For a bulletin board teaching color, for example, the question may ask about common orange items. Under the flap can be a sampling of some of these items. What exactly is behind the flaps will depend on the subject, the age of the students and the focus of the bulletin board. You can also have jokes or riddles related to the subject matter on one side and the answers on the other side.
Stimulate senses other than sight
Of course, students see bulletin boards, however you can allow them to do much more than that with your interactive version. For instance, if you are teaching young students about the different types of fruit, then purchase some scents and spray it on the board. The children can go up and actually smell an orange or strawberry. You may find lotions that have this scent or you can use the actual item to make it.
You can also include different textures to your board. You may want to teach children about how certain animals feel. You can purchase some fabric or another item that can simulate the feel so that they can come up and get a little of the experience of actually touching the animal.
Even sound may be used on a bulletin board. If it is a bulletin board for a classroom of very young children, then you can get some something that places a nursery rhyme tune and let them press the button to hear it. You can even mount some small musical instruments onto it.
Put up puzzles or games
Some teachers will actually turn their bulletin board into a giant crossword puzzle that the children can do. You may put up questions that the children have to answer. There may be quizzes on the board that the kids must solve.
There are many different ways that you can make a classroom bulletin board interactive. Try a variety of different techniques to keep the kids interested and promote learning.
