Well-behaved and two year old may not be two terms that you think of together, however your actions can help you raise a toddler that displays appropriate actions.
Model good behavior
Children, even those as young as two year olds, will follow the example set by their parents. You will want to show the behavior that you want your children to display. If you are running around hitting people or screaming at every little thing then your two year olds will learn that this is the way to behave. If you always make a mess and never clean up, then they might as well. As much as possible, you should show the actions that promote good behavior. Be kind to others. Show them that you always clean up with them. Do these behaviors with them.
Make good behaviors fun
You want the children to get into the habit of doing good behaviors. A lot of two year olds are just going to do whatever behavior they think is the most fun, and if you can show them the good behaviors are this then they may be more likely to display them. Sing as you clean up. Have a big smile as you show that you touch another child gently instead of playing too rough. Make a game of whispering when you are out instead of screaming.
Stay calm
When you get excited, your two year old might as well, and then they may not display good behavior. Having a two year old can be very taxing, and it is understandable that you may get frustrated or nervous. As much as possible, try to stay calm in front of them. You want the situation to stay calm. If you can remain so, there is more of a likelihood that they will as well.
Give them enough attention
Some two year olds act out because they are trying to gain their parents’ attention. Give them this and you may help to avoid bad behavior.
Reward them
You want to reward them for their good behavior so that they are more likely to continue it. When they do something good, then praise them. You can even give them a small present or treat if they do something especially well. Of course, do not make gifts so often that they come to expect it.
Provide firm and consistent discipline
If they do something wrong, then it is okay to put them in a small timeout for a minute or two. Spanking is not recommended, as this can make the behavior worse. Do not allow them to just engage in bad behaviors.
With hard work, you can have a well-behaved two year old, or at least a better-behaved one. The above tips may be of use.
