How to Recognize if you are an Emotional Hoarder
There are many people who are emotional hoarders. You keep things that you do not really need not for practical or logical reasons but for emotional ones. This can be a counterproductive behavior and clutter both your physical home as well as your mentality. The following are ways to recognize if this is how you are.
You keep things that you have not used in years
If you look through your items and recognize things that you have not utilized in years, then you might be an emotional hoarder. You should examine everything and try to think of the last time that you used each one. It is not a good sign if you cannot remember the last time that you used something. What’s more, if you have difficulty getting rid of that item even knowing that you have not used it, then you might be keeping it for the wrong reasons.
You keep items that you know you will never use again in the future
Even if you wore that outfit every other day for years, it may be a problem if you are keeping it despite the fact that you know that you will simply never wear it again. Perhaps it doesn’t fit or the style is so far gone that you just could never see yourself wearing it again. To help with clutter, it is best to try to keep things that you think you will have a future use for. It may be a problem if you just get attached to every material item and desperately want them even if you do not see a future need for them. If the thought of getting rid of every little thing makes you want to cry, then you should try to figure out the deeper emotions.
Your home is cluttered
Look around your home. Are there things on the floor because you have simply run out of space in the closets? Is your garage so full of old junk that you cannot even dream of getting your car into it? Did you need to rent a storage space just to have all of your old things? Do you have boxes that you have labeled “junk” or which contain items that are just there for the sake of being there but that you never really want to see again? When your home is overrun with clutter then you might not feel good and it can be hard to have guests. Think about how you feel about your material items. Do you feel more emotional than you should? These might also be signs of an emotional hoarder.
Of course, you should look at everything in perspective. It is okay to keep some things for sentimental value. No one will fault you for keeping your wedding dress even though you are unlikely to use it again. However, think about the amount of items that you have that you just feel like you cannot live without even though you do not use them. The above signs may help you recognize if you are an emotional hoarder and need to take steps to get over it.
