Use smaller plates
You may not think that this would be effective, however studies have shown that using smaller plates helps people eat less, according to Science Daily. You can’t take as much food as you can if you have a larger plate. Obviously you can go back for seconds, but many people find that they are full after the first portion. It will help you avoid filling your plate with too much and then eating something just because it’s there.
Avoid buffets
Many people simply cannot help themselves while they are at buffets. This type of restaurant is no good for someone who tends to overeat. Avoid these and choose sit-down restaurants instead.
Take small portions
Take smaller portions than you think you’ll need. You can always go back. As the saying goes, sometimes our eyes are bigger than our stomachs.
Stop when you are full
Do not feel like you have to eat every single morsel that is on your plate, as it can completely sabotage a diet. It is okay to save food. In fact it is great because then you will have leftovers to eat later. Ask for a doggie bag when you go to a restaurant. If the portions are too big and you know it, then ask for half of it to be wrapped up right away so that you will not be tempted.
Keep healthy food around the house
Do not keep junk food around the house. You can eat a lot of it before realizing how much you’ve eaten, and most junk food is full of empty calories and not good for you.
Write down what you eat
When you keep track of what you eat, you will be less likely to eat too much. You will see whether you are eating more than you need and will hopefully make better choices.
