It is important to teach values to teens. There are different ways that one might go about this, and oftentimes combining a variety of methods is the best way to get your point across. Consider the following ideas.
Talk to your teen about values
You first may want to talk to your child about the differences between right and wrong. Talk about why it is important to have values in different areas of their lives. For instance, discuss why it is important not to cheat and steal and why honesty is so important. Talk about why it is important to have the right priorities and to be good to others. You should give examples of situations children may be faced with such as if they are with someone who tries to steal or they see someone drop money.
With younger teens who are receptive you can even role-play good values. You can take a situation that they may be faced with and have them try to figure out what the right thing to do would be. For instance, you can pretend that someone needs help crossing the street and see if they make the decision to help them.
Show your own good values
No matter what you say, it is sometimes what you do that children will follow. Show that you have good values. Show that you give to charity. Show that you help people across the street. Show that you respect yourself and others.
Do activities with them that promote good values
You can take your teen with you to do some volunteer work. You can give to a charity together. You also want to teach your teen good family ideals. You can do this by showing how you take care of elderly relatives. Take them with you when you visit someone who is in a nursing home, for instance. You can call those in need and spend the time to do good for others, even when you get nothing in return. Also, a lot of high schools have volunteer programs that they might be able to join.
Praise them when they do something that shows good values
A lot of teens love to be complimented. You can help reinforce the behavior by telling them that you are proud of them when they do something good.
It is important for children to learn good values. Consider the above tips to help you instill these important ideals in your kids.
