(419 Words)
It is important to teach your children to study and to study well. This can make the difference in how well they prepare for tests and ultimately how well they do on their exams. Consider the following tips for passing down these lessons.
Talk to your children
Do not assume that your children will just know how to study on their own. It is an important skill, and you can share some of the methods that you use for studying with them. For instance, if you like to highlight different points in books while studying, you can show them how to do that. If you always use flash cards in your studying, then you can show them that method. There may be different mnemonic techniques that you have found useful when studying, and you can share these with them as well. Share what you have learned throughout the years.
Impart how it is important not to procrastinate with studying
Procrastination is a big problem when it comes to studying. It is important to teach your children that it is far better to give yourself enough time to study. You can help them figure out a study schedule that is right for them. Help them also to figure out when they have studied enough for a test by quizzing themselves.
Do not allow them to have distractions and interruptions while studying
You want your children to learn that they should have a good study environment. They should not be taking frequent breaks. Every time they stop studying it may take them quite a while to get themselves focused again. You can talk them about avoiding these. Also, distractions can make it much harder to learn. You should not allow them to watch television while studying. You should teach them that they should not surf the Internet or answer e-mails if they are studying. They should not take phone calls unless it is an emergency.
Teach by example
Sometimes the best way to teach something is to show that you practice it. You may not be studying exactly but you can show the same principles when you have work to do for your job for instance. When you are trying to work on something you can show that you avoid all distractions. You can show that you do not procrastinate or take frequent breaks. Show that you “practice what you preach,” so to speak.
It is important to teach children to study. Utilize the above tips to help you do this.
