It is not easy to turn someone down. You may feel guilty, and yet it is not a reason to say yes to someone whom you really do not want to date. The following are ways to turn someone down nicely.
Thank them for their interest
You want them to know that you are very flattered by their interest. You do not want them to think that you take it lightly. You can tell them that you really appreciate their query.
If you have a good reason for turning them down (that is not offensive) then tell them
You may have a reason that even they cannot refute. For instance, if you do not want to date because you will soon be moving, then tell them that. If you are already involved with someone then you can share that as well.
It is very important not to tell them something that is insulting. If you do not want to date them because they have the most hideous odor or the most obnoxious laugh, then do not want to share this. That will serve no purpose but to hurt their feelings.
If you really just do not feel like a relationship would work then tell them that gently. It is okay to be frank and just say that you feel that you would be best as friends. You can share with them how important your friendship is to you (if you are friends). It is reasonable to say in a gentle voice that you just do not see it going further than that.
Some people are more comfortable telling a little white lie such as that they are already involved with someone else. This might help the person feel better if they do not think that it was them. It is up to you to decide whether this would be the kindest way to let them down. You just must make sure that they will not catch you since that will make it far worse.
Stay away from the clichés
Do not say the “It’s not you, it’s me” line since almost everyone knows that it is rarely true. Do not tell them that they will find someone better – that is not what they want to hear.
Turning someone down can be difficult for both you and the person hearing it, and you want to be as kind as possible. If possible try to tell them in person instead of sending a text message or another less personal method. Show that you respect them.
