Diversity training is extremely important for a business. It can help people get along and appreciate others for what they have on the inside rather than on the outside. In addition, it can help the company avoid a problem because of improper behavior on someone’s part. There are many ways to conduct diversity training, and you may incorporate diversity training into your business with the following methods.
Let the employees role play
Your employees may think it is a little silly, but role playing can really get the idea of diversity across. You can have the employees role play situations in which employees acted appropriately or inappropriately. You can try to give people a taste for what it feels like to be looked down upon simply because they are different. Hopefully such role playing will help them reach empathy.
Have them read a short story about diversity
The employees may be able to relate better to a story. You can write out something short for the employees to read, which talks about a main character who is a minority. It can discuss their struggles and the ways in which they are treated unfairly. Hopefully the employees will feel bad for this situation and might be less likely to practice it in the future.
Have a brainstorming session about inappropriate behaviors
Sometimes people do things that are hurtful to others without even realizing it. They may think that they are doing something “in fun” and yet it can be very hurtful to another. You may want to have everyone come up with some behaviors that can be hurtful to others such as making jokes.
Show a video on diversity
There are different videos that you can purchase that showcase diversity. There are some that are specifically made for companies to teach this. In addition, there are many fictional movies or shows that have this come up as an issue. You may be able to show clips from these, and it might make your workers more sensitive to these issues.
It is very important to include diversity training for your employees. This can help keep relations at your business harmonious. There are many different strategies that can do this, and oftentimes the best way is to use a combination of methods in order to send this message home.
