New Parent Stress Reduction Techniques

(405 Words)
Being a new parent is all things wonderful, but that doesn’t mean it is not stressful. Sleep-deprived with an awesome new set of responsibilities and tasks, new parents may feel overwhelmed by the stress in their lives. Various strategies can reduce this stress.
Get sleep when you can
Sleep deprivation is a large part of the stress new parents feel, according to therapist Karen Kleiman at Babycenter. If possible, try to take naps to make up for some of the lost sleep. Newborns actually sleep quite a bit, just not in large spans. If you can sleep during the day when he or she sleeps, you might make yourself feel better.
Accept help
Some new parents feel like they have to do it all – be there for every diaper change and every cry. It is okay to accept help from loved ones. Often, a grandparent, close family member or a friend is happy to step in and help, but the parents feel they need to do it all on their own.
Eat healthy
Just because you do not have time to cook elaborate meals doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthy. Do not give in to the temptation to make every meal a fast food one. Microwave frozen vegetables and eat lots of fruits and other quick and easy healthy foods.
Keep in touch with your friends
Do not give up every other part of your life when you become a parent. If you always call your best friend every night then try to keep at least somewhat in contact with her even if it is only a five-minute call. If you find that reading relaxes you, then do that.
Exercise
Exercise reduces stress and helps new mothers lose their baby weight. Make sure to find out what is recommended by the doctor. You can take the baby out for a nice walk. When the doctor clears it, try to get in some cardio exercise.
Find some alone time
Just because you have a new baby does not mean that you have to lose all time for yourself and your spouse. Try to catch small amounts of time while the baby is sleeping or someone else is watching the baby. Talk to your spouse and respond to his or her feelings.
It is very hectic when a baby is first born. Fortunately, it gets easier after a few months. The above steps can ease the process.
