Ocean Swimming Safety Tips

It is pure bliss to swim in the sapphire waters of the ocean. This great marvel of nature belies a potentially dangerous nature, however, and it is vital to take the proper safety precautions when swimming in the ocean.
Pay attention to warnings
Before you even set foot in the water, you must pay attention to all safety warnings posed by the local government or beach officials. You will often find these posted on the local websites. For instance, if rip currents are in the area, swimming is not always advised. Sometimes bacteria or other contaminates makes it inadvisable to swim. According to the Brevard County Fire Rescue, you should specifically ask the lifeguards about the conditions of the beach and surf before venturing out.
Be wary of rip currents
Rip currents can be extremely dangerous. According to the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior, if you get caught in a rip current, you should swim parallel to shore and across the current. Try for an angle so that you are slowly inching back to shore. Do not fight the current by swimming right against it. Stay calm.
Swim where there are lifeguards if possible
It is not always possible or desirable to swim in an area monitored by lifeguards, however they can add a vital element of protection. Someone who is not a strong swimmer or who will be swimming with children may especially choose to find a beach that offers lifeguards. Pay heed to the hours of service. Stay near to where they are stationed. Be sure to adhere to any instructions they give you.

Do not swim with shiny objects

Be wary of the area
Remember that sand bars can suddenly drop away. Be wary when swimming in the ocean, especially in an unfamiliar area.

These can cause injury when they collapse. You should also always look at the ocean so that you do not get swept off of a tide pool or coastal bluff.
