Running a restaurant is extremely challenging. There are many pressures involved that you will not see in other businesses. The following are just a few of these.
You must always make sure that all of the food is safe
One of the biggest pressures of running a restaurant is making sure that the food is safe. Improper food handling can cause serious illness. Even one incident can cause major havoc to a person and destroy your business. You must always be sure that all proper food handling and food safety steps occur. Also, everything should be kept as clean as possible. You will encounter many different inspections, and failing them can mean that your business is shut down. Even if it is only temporary it can create a reputation that affects your business forever.
Dealing with irate customers
Things often go wrong in restaurants, and you may have to deal with irate customers. They may be upset because of waiting, the food did not taste good, they received bad service, there was a cleanliness issue or so forth. You need to be able to deal with these customers without making a scene in front of everyone. If possible, you should be able to make them leave happy and feel that you satisfactorily handled the problem or gave them enough to make up for it.
You have the pressure of having the right amount of waiters
When running a restaurant, it can be difficult to schedule the waiters. Because they make so much off of their tips, you do not want to have too many working. However, you of course need enough to tend to the people. Sometimes customer turnout is unpredictable so under this pressure you need to be able to handle picking up the slack if there are not enough waiters and being able to handle the extra cost if you have too many.
You also may need to deal with huge crowds and getting everyone in and out
People who are waiting might get frustrated. Some managers try innovative techniques such as offering free drinks if they have to wait for a long time. You should also try to properly estimate time. People get very frustrated if you tell them that their wait will be a certain time and it exceeds that.
Running a restaurant is filled with many pressures. Being a waiter can also be difficult so you may have to deal with irate employees. You should allow them to come in to talk to you. Try to stay logical and calm when running your restaurant to deal the best with the pressures.
