Pros and Cons of Magnetic Clasps

(495 Words)
Magnetic clasps are very popular in many types of jewelry, although they are often seen in bracelets and necklaces. There are both advantages and disadvantages to such magnetic jewelry clasps.
One big advantage of a magnetic clasp is that it is much easier to put on. In most cases, you simply need to hold both ends of the clasp near each other and they will snap together. It takes but a second to get them on and then off. You may not have a lot of time to get ready in the morning and want something that will fasten in just a second.
Many types of clasps are very difficult to put together. People may find that it hurts their fingers or nails in order to put a traditional clasp together, but you do not have to worry about this with magnetic clasps.
Some people even find that magnetic clasps are the only ones they can use at all. For instance, someone with arthritis may simply find it too difficult to fasten a traditional clasp, and it may hurt too much. Others may simply not be capable of using any other type of clasp. It can also be extremely difficult for children to use traditional clasps.
Magnetic jewelry clasps help some people wear jewelry because they are often also easier to take off than traditional clip clasps. To illustrate, when you get home you might want to just be able to quickly remove your jewelry and put it in your jewelry box. Nevertheless, ABC news recommends trying on clasped jewelry prior to purchase in order to avoid wasting money.
One disadvantage of magnetic clasps is that sometimes they will stick to other metal things. You might find this inconvenient and annoying. Whether this happens will depend on the actual piece and where it is.
Another disadvantage is that sometimes the jewelry pieces with magnetic clasps are more costly than the same piece of jewelry with the traditional clasp. In other words, you may pay a premium for this convenience.
Magnetic jewelry clasps are not necessarily available on most pieces of jewelry either. If you want such a clasp on an existing piece of jewelry that does not have one, then you will have to buy the magnetic clasp to attach the traditional one or get a jeweler to put it on.
Some people are concerned about the ease at which magnetic clasps come off; a good one should not fall off. However, although they are easier to come off than a traditional clasps, you may worry that it will be easier for somebody to snatch off of your neck or off of your wrist. Also, if it breaks, it may be harder to fix.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to using magnetic clasps. Think about how easy it is for you to use traditional clasps and whether you like the magnetic ones better.
