(412 Words)
Children can get into the spirit of the holidays by helping to decorate the home. There are many different ways that they can do their part, and the exact craft that you devise will be dependent on their age. They may enjoy one of the following decorating ideas.
Christmas tree ornaments
Why purchase impersonal Christmas tree ornaments when your children can make them? Instead of buying shiny balls, get some Styrofoam balls and let your children decorate them with paints and embellishments. Your children can make a holiday drawing on a piece of paper, cut it out and then laminate it. Just punch a hole in the top, add a string and you can have a beautiful, one of a kind masterpiece for your tree.
Christmas picture frames
Many people like to put up holiday photographs during the season. Your children can make picture frames for these. From craft stores you can purchase plain wooden frames. You can buy paint that goes on wood. They can write things out such as “Happy Holidays!” or they can paint little pictures such as snowflakes. When they have finished you can put in a photograph and put it up.
Christmas posters
Many people like to decorate with large cutouts of holiday scenes. Instead of buying these premade, you can buy poster board and have your children make their own Christmas scenes. For instance, they can draw a large picture of Santa Claus. They can make the reindeer driving his sled. If you want something inspirational, they can draw a scene from the nativity. They can just make snowflakes by folding paper, cutting out little snips from the side and then unfolding it. They can use art supplies like makers, crayons and paints. They can also glue on various embellishments such as glitter, beads, crystals, rhinestones, and more. You can then post these up around the house.
Garland
There are many different types of garland that children can make, which you can then hang around the tree, through railings and in other locations. They start with a string. They can use different colored bright beads or even make their own items to thread through such as paper decorations like a shining yellow star.
There are many great decorations that kids can make to make the home beautiful for the holidays. Make it something that is fun that will make a nice keepsake for them. Evaluate whether any of the above ideas are right for your family.
