Reasons why a Manager should Dress the Sharpest
A manager should always be the sharpest dressed person in the office. There are different reasons to make this your policy.
You want to seem competent
Many people seem more competent when they are dressed sharply. If you are dressed like you just rolled out of bed or if your clothing is ripped, dirty or stained, then it may seem like you do not care enough about yourself to look good. You may just seem like a weaker person. When you dress nicer you may just have an air about you that says that you are in charge. You may even feel more so when you are wearing something that looks very nice.
The employees may resent you if they are forced to dress formally but you do not
Many managers want their employees to dress well. It can foster productivity and give the office a more professional atmosphere. You will seem the hypocrite, however, if you ask that people dress nicely, but then you dress in a less sharp way yourself. The employees may resent it since many of them would prefer to be in more casual clothing. They may feel like you are not taking their thoughts into consideration. They many start to talk about you or just might not do the work as well because they are instead focused on your clothing. They may understand you asking it of them, however, if you at least dress that way yourself.
You want others to follow your example
Sometimes people will start to dress a little more casually at the office. They may try to get away with what they can. If you show that you always take the time to look very nice and sharp, then they may instead follow your example. When you are the manager people look to your cues when deciding on their behaviors, and that includes deciding how to dress. You may find that they will slip less when you are dressed sharply.
You will look better to your superiors and customers
Many managers have managers themselves. It may be the owner of the business. It may be a board of directors. You may want to impress them so that you can get promoted or be viewed more favorably when it comes time for a raise. Also, many managers have to deal with clients or customers. These important people may also think more of you when you are dressed sharply.
It is important for a manager to dress sharply. The above reasons highlight the importance of this.
