Retail Sales Pitches that Consumers can’t Resist

(420 Words)
You hear the retail sales pitch and you simply cannot stop yourself from buying. Marketing professionals know exactly which strategies are oh-so-tempting. The following are some of these methods.
Free money
A lot of stores will now give you a gift certificate if you spend a certain amount of money at their store. For instance, a very common one is to give out $10 for every $50 that someone spends. They say that it is like getting paid to shop, but obviously this is not true since you would have had to have spent $50 in order to get it. It is somewhat akin to getting $10 off of a $60 purchase ($50 plus the additional $10 you will have to spend later).
Some stores have a different approach with free money. They will put out a coupon that gives you a dollar mount. The dollar amounts may be large but of course the minimum expenditures are usually far larger. These can be very tempting to a lot of people however. The catch is that many people actually spend far more than the total amount so it works out to much less a percentage then it seems.
BOGO
Many places have a buy one, get one free offer. This can be tempting, but you need o think about whether you actually need two of an item. Sometimes you have to buy more, such as buy two and get one free or even more. With this strategy the store may get people to spend far more than they would have. Saying that you get something for free may just seem too great to give up but if you have to spend something then it is not quite like getting something for free.
No payment for x amount of time
Many stores offer deals where you do not have to pay for a long time without interest. People will find this unable to resist because it will almost feel like they are getting something for nothing. Of course this is not really true, and you will have to pay eventually. What’s more, if you do not pay it off by the end of the trial period, you often have to pay for everything including interest accrued all the way back. Now that is not such a great deal!
There are many retail sales pitches that get consumers. Unfortunately a lot of these are not truly as great as they sound. The above pitches are some for which to be on the lookout.
