As a writer, there may come a time when you need to present your work to an audience. Certain strategies may assist you in this process.
Be confident
It can be difficult for some writers to speak in front of a group of people. By nature, many writers are more accustomed to writing to an audience than speaking to them, thus you may not feel confident. As much as possible, you should try to gain this confidence, however. Do not be intimidated, and be proud of your work. They may have trouble believing in it if you do not act like you do.
Make sure to give enough background information
When you have written about a subject you likely know it very well. Sometimes writers make the mistake of giving a presentation about something they have written and jumping right into information that will leave the audience confused. For instance, if you are talking about a story you have written, then you may want to discuss the setting of the story.
Make sure to gear the speech to the audience
You want your speech to make sense for those who are listening. Let’s say you have written a piece about medical care. Obviously your presentation will be far different if it is being presented to doctors as compared to patients. Make sure that the audience would understand all terminology or explain them.
Keep the speech moving
You want the audience to enjoy the speech and stay interested. Make sure to cover all of the points that are important to the audience. Try to bring up interesting facts. Do not spend a lot time on one small facet. Pay attention to any time restrictions.
Prepare and practice
You want to have proper preparation to help make your presentation a success. If you do not know exactly what you want to say about your written work, then you can practice. You may have a friend that will work with you. Also, bring along note cards if it will help you while you are giving the presentation. You do not want to just read word for word from it with your eyes glued down, but instead use it as an aid to help you get in all the points you wish to include.
The thought of presenting your written work to an audience may seem daunting. Many writers feel like their work is their child. With confidence and logic, utilize the tips listed above to make a successful presentation.
