: Ways to be a Successful Intern

:
(467 Words)
An internship can provide a rare opportunity to learn about a job and can even pave the way to a future career. You will want to do the best you can to be successful at this so that you get a good recommendation and perhaps even a job offer. Consider the following strategies.
Have a good attitude
It is important to have a good attitude when you are an intern. Show that you are eager to learn. Understand that as the intern you are the low man on the totem pole so to speak. You may be asked to do things that you feel are beneath you such as bring someone coffee (obviously you should be doing some of the actual job as well). You may be doing more menial labor than you thought. Take all of this in stride. A lot of people get their start from this. Most companies want people who are amicable. If you are instead complaining about every little thing then they might not want you around. Of course if someone is acting inappropriate around you or if you are the target of sexual harassment then that is another matter altogether and should be brought up with the superiors.
Treat it as if it were a real job
Even if you are not being paid, you want to be professional. You want to show that you are taking it seriously. As such you should make sure to be there on time. Do not take extra long lunches or goof around talking to your co-workers. Do not skip out early or take off a lot of days for invalid reasons. Be efficient in your work.
Learn as much as you can
Part of being a successful intern is to take in as much as you can. It can be a way for you to gain knowledge about a position without having all of the responsibilities. You should take advantage of this time and of the people that are there who might be able to help you. Practice your duties so that you become more proficient with them. It can give you a head start when you go for a regular position.
Impress them with your knowledge
Show them that you know a lot about their business. Take the time to research the organization. Show that you have valuable insight. Show initiative. Give them your ideas. Be confident in yourself.
Go the extra mile
A lot of times successful interns are those who go the extra mile. They may stay a little late or get in early. You may volunteer for the less than desirable projects.
An internship may be the way you get a job in this less than stellar economy. Consider the above points to help you see success in this role.
