: What to look for in a Good Contractor
:
(423 Words)
A good contractor can make all of the difference in a project for your home. The following are some characteristics to look for in such a professional.
Make sure that he is licensed
You want to find a good contractor who has all of the proper licenses and can get the necessary permits. Someone who has the correct license might be more of a professional. If you get someone who does not have a license, you may pay less but you might get into trouble and even need to redo the work if the authorities find out about it!
Someone who is knowledgeable about safety codes
You want everything done to code. It is important to find a contractor who is very knowledgeable about this. If not, you can end up with a dangerous situation.
Someone who has experience in this exact area
You want a contractor who has experience in whatever you need done. The more they have done it before, the more qualified they might be at doing it in the future. You can look for someone who has come with recommendations. If you know someone who has used him or her with success, then that might give you a better chance of being happy as well.
Someone who has quality people working for him
Even if you get the best contractor in the world, he will be no good if the people who are working for him – those who are actually doing the work – are no good. Different contractors pay their employees different wages, and some are just better at hiring quality people. You might want to ask him or her about that before you hire.
Someone who will be punctual and get things done on time
You ask how long the project will take. Two weeks is the reply. A week and a half later, you ask how much is left. Two weeks is the reply. Another week passes, and the reply is the same. This is far from uncommon. Especially if you have a deadline such as if you are trying to move into a new house and the old one is sold, you want someone who will get it done in a reasonable amount of time. Of course, small delays are common, but it should be within reason.
A good contractor can make all the difference in your work. Search for someone who is within your budget, of course. Also, have a consultation before you hire someone so that you can confirm the above qualities in them.
