What to Pack in a Diaper Bag for a Toddler

Diaper bags are not just for infants. Parents of toddlers often carry them as well, but their needs may be far different from those with an infant. They may choose to carry the following items.
Diapers
Many toddlers are still in diapers. If your child still requires these or pull-ups, then you will want to have several.
Baby wipes
Whether or not your toddler is still in diapers, you will want to carry baby wipes in the diaper bag. These can help when you are changing your toddler (if applicable), or just cleaning up a messy face.
Change of clothing
It is not uncommon for a toddler to need a change of clothing during the day. For any one of a hundred reasons, from a bathroom accident to food messiness, they may need something else to wear. You also may want to bring a jacket if there is any chance you will be going somewhere where it could be chilly.
Drink
Many toddlers get thirsty during the day. Spill-proof sippy cups provide an easy way to carry water, juice or other drinks that they may enjoy.
Food
Many toddlers like to snack between meals. You can bring an array of healthy foods such as whole grain cereals, granola bars, dried fruit and more.
Medical supplies
Toddlers will sometimes get sick very quickly. It may be advisable to bring a small thermometer with you so that if your child develops a fever while you are out, you will be able to quantify it. It may also be useful to bring some medication such as Tylenol, as long as you are certain that your child will not be able to access it while it is in the diaper bag. You may also want an antibiotic ointment, band-aids, diaper cream, allergy medication and other small, yet essential, medical supplies.
Camera
The milestones do not stop once your child is out of infancy. There are many amazing moments that happen while a child is a toddler, and you want to be able to capture all of these. Bring along a small camera so that you are always ready.
Important numbers
If you do not know it by heart, you may want to write the number of your child’s pediatrician inside the diaper bag. You can also include other important numbers such as school numbers of your other children and contact information of family members.
Small book or toy
You may go somewhere and desperately wish your child was entertained. A small book may keep a toddler busy for a long time. You can also bring along a small toy.
What exactly you put into your toddler diaper bag is going to depend on you, your child and your destination. The above elements may make useful additions.
