Adult students are often very focused on educational goals. A variety of factors play a part in this.
Adult students are generally more mature than younger students. Many of them have already faced the rigors and realities of adult life. With this maturity, they may be more focused on achieving high educational goals. Younger students may still be in a “juvenile mode.” They may be going to school more because it is what is expected of them.
With more maturity may be more awareness of what could happen if one does not attain education goals. Adults may know that if they do not do well in school, they will not get where they want in their career. A lot of younger students may be used to their parents “bailing them out.” They may be used to the second and third chances many get in the lower echelons of school.
Many adult students know exactly what field they want to go into. They can be very focused on educational goals because they can see where they are trying to go. They know that they need to reach these goals in order to realize their work or other goals. Many younger students are not yet sure of what they want to do. They may not be as focused on their educational goals because they have not yet associated them with life goals. They may not realize the consequences that can occur if they do not reach their educational goals.
A lot of adult students are giving up a lot in order to go to school. They may have to stop working. They may be spending a lot of money since there is often fewer scholarships available for programs for older students. Because of all they are giving, they may want to make sure they are getting a lot. Therefore they will want to reach their educational goals.
Many younger students are looking for a variety of things in their college experience. Of course they want to do well in school, but they are also likely to be looking for a social experience as well. This may compete with the desire to do well with their educational goals, sometimes at the expense of the latter. Many of the adult students, however, are much more interested in the educational side of schooling. They may be more likely to have families, a job and other parts of their lives.
Many adult students are very focused on their educational goals. The above reasons highlight the reasons behind this.
