Why Dental Tourism is Gaining in Popularity

(401 Words)
Dental tourism is the practice of traveling outside of one’s home country in order to get dental work done. Sometimes the person travels solely for the purpose of the dental work whereas other times it is combined with a vacation. For varying reasons, dental tourism is gaining in popularity.
The main reason why dental tourism is gaining in popularity is because of the price savings. Dentists in certain countries charge far less for the same dental procedures. In a time when many people no longer have dental insurance or whose dental coverage is limited, this might make the difference between them being able to get the dental work that they need and not. People are also hearing about it more, and that is another reason why it is gaining in popularity. There are many different countries that are common destinations of dental tourism.
Other reasons why dental tourism may be gaining in popularity is because other places offer safer dental care. People may feel more comfortable with the dentists of another country because they are more regulated or require more schooling.
Some countries have long waits for dental work or it is not as convenient. Patients may travel to other countries for an increase in convenience. They may be able to get a quicker appointment or see someone they like better.
There are various problems with dental tourism of which anyone who is considering it should be aware. First, oftentimes the countries that are cheaper are less regulated. You may even be getting dental work from someone who has not had formal schooling and is not a real dentist. Even dental work can be dangerous if performed wrong. You could literally be putting your life in the hands of someone without experience. It is vital to carefully consider this when deciding whether to conduct dental tourism.
Another problem is that if there is an issue you will be far from your home. If you have a medical emergency during dental work, for instance, you may not be covered by your home health insurance and not be near your own doctor.
Dental tourism has gained in popularity, and is more common in certain places. Before you consider this, you must evaluate all of the pros and cons. Especially consider any physical risk you may be placing yourself into, especially if you go somewhere that has less regulation and enforcement of dental rules.
