Fad weight loss diets may seem great. People tout their amazing benefits and everyone signs on. In many cases, however, the fad diets simply do not work or will only work for a short amount of time. Sometimes, there are serious problems and risks associated with fad diets.
They may not work
Many fad diets simply do not help people lose weight, according to WebMD. A few people may think that they do, but there may be no scientific studies to support it. You may go to a lot of trouble and not find results.
They may cut out important foods
A lot of fad diets cut out important foods. For instance, one of the popular fad diets did not allow you to have a lot of fruits, which have an important dietary benefit.
Some of them allow you to have too much of a certain type of food. For instance, those who cut out carbs were allowed to have a lot of high fat meats that were very unhealthy.
They may be too restrictive
Many fad diets are too restrictive. They make you eat in a certain way that does not really have a scientific basis. You might be able to achieve the same results and eat in a more balanced and healthier way. Also, a lot of them make it difficult to find meals that fit in with the diet.
They are not sustainable
Many fad diets are not sustainable. It simply might not be something that a person could or would keep up. For instance, many people jumped on the diet to completely eliminate carbs, however people love bread and carbs too much to give them up for all time. Many diets are too difficult for people to stick with for very long.
They are too severe
Many fad diets are too severe and can be dangerous. For instance, the diet may involve you cutting out far too many calories. If you cut out calories, you might lose weight very quickly however it is not healthy for your body. You could get sick. Also as soon as you stop the diet you will gain the weight right back.
Fad diets may seem great but they are usually too restrictive, too severe or not based on scientific research. Instead people who want to lose weight should look for balanced healthy diets in which they eat healthy food and eat in moderation.
