Often overlooked for more “solid” academics such as math and English, health classes are often passed over by school officials. Yet their importance belies school officials’ belief in them, for they can play a vital role in the education of a child. The following are some reasons why health classes are important for grade school students.
Many children do things that are very unhealthy
Many children do not understand the importance of healthy eating and other issues highlighted in a health class curriculum. They may eat junk food constantly, not truly understanding how these foods can affect their body or why other foods are so good for them. It is a good lesson to learn about as children. Understanding the importance of eating healthy might motivate some of them to eat healthier, and this can be very good for their bodies. It can be something that they take along with them as they age.
Many adults eat unhealthy and have other poor lifestyle practices
Why should the fact that many adults eat poorly influence whether children should have health classes? There is a two-fold reason for this. First, because so many adults eat unhealthy or have unhealthy lifestyles, as evidenced by the weight epidemic that is gripping America, they are in an ill position to teach their children how to eat healthy and have a healthy lifestyle. Children often learn more by example than by what people tell them, so if they watch their parents eating unhealthy, then they are likely to do so as well. They may just not know better. The second reason is that adults may grow up to eat or be unhealthy because they were not taught in school otherwise. With more health classes, the students will better learn how to eat and be healthy.
It can introduce children into a wonderful field that they may be interested in
There are many jobs that are in the health-related and nutritional fields. Many students may become interested in them from these classes. They might find them fascinating, and it might even set some children on exciting career paths.
Health classes are extremely important. They can teach children about their own bodies and why it is so important to make the right eating and lifestyle choices. Schools and school districts that are phasing them out or offering them less often should think about the positive things that they provide and consider keeping them.
