Tips for Returning to Work after a Long Term Illness

(523 Words)
Returning to work after a long illness can be challenging. Different methods can help you make it a smooth and comfortable transition. Try as many strategies as possible to help you during this time.
Do not expect too much from yourself
You may expect that you can jump right back into your job as if no time had passed at all. The truth is that this is rarely the case. First, even if you are recovered from your illness, you may still be a little slower at this point. It can be difficult to stop a routine and then start it again. Even if you are the same, your work may not be. It will depend on your job, of course, but things may be different from when you were there. They may be working on different projects or have different agendas. Even the staff may have changed.
If you expect too much, then you might get overwhelmed if you do not succeed. Be forgiving if you are a little slower or do not perform exactly as you did beforehand. As time passes, you should get back to where you were.
It is important not to promise more than you can deliver. You may be eager to impress people and show them what you can do. If you overextend yourself, then you may not only suffer mental consequences but physical ones as well that might even get you sick again.
Get support
Hopefully your supervisors and coworkers will be sympathetic to your position. If they offer help, do not be so prideful that you refuse them even if you need it. You may need to catch up on things. You can see if you can schedule some time to go over changes with people. You may want to take some work home or give yourself a little extra time.
Make your work environment as comfortable as possible
There may be ways that you can adapt your work environment to make it easier to return to work, especially if you are suffering from any long-lasting effects of your illness. For instance, if you have a sore back as part of your illness, then perhaps you can bring a pillow or back support to add to your chair. Also bring in something new and comforting to your desk such as a family photograph or plant to make it a more comfortable place to be. If you need accommodations because of any physical issues, then do not be afraid to discuss it with your boss.
Focus on your work
It can be difficult to work after getting accustomed to being at home. Try to avoid distractions and focus on the tasks on hand so that you can perform well.
Take care of yourself
Make sure that you are taking proper care of yourself when not at work to put yourself in the best mental and physical condition. Get enough sleep before you go in and eat well. Schedule some time for relaxation.
Returning to work after a long illness can be daunting. With time you should be back in the routine of a successful work career.
