How to Communicate with your Childs School
It is vital to communicate with your child’s school whenever a question, concern or issue arises. There are many ways that you can talk to them, and how you do so will largely be dependent upon the methods that the school implements.
E-mail
Many schools now have e-mail access. This can be a great way to get a quick response from a lot of school professionals. Many teachers will allow you to e-mail them with questions or concerns about their students. You can also sometimes reach them after hours with this method (helpful when you have an issue with the homework!) Many school administrators also give out a professional e-mail for parents to utilize. These are often available on the school’s website. In addition, the website of the school will sometimes have a form that you can fill out and it will send the message straight to the recipient. Of course, e-mail is not the best for an in-depth lengthy conversation, and you cannot always portray your feelings in this method.
Telephone
Many parents choose to call the school in order to communicate about issues or problems that are occurring. If you want to talk to the teacher you can call before or after school, however you may want to ask when a good time to talk would be since teachers are often very busy. You may make an appointment to talk to a school official or leave a voicemail for them to call you back.
Personal visit
In many cases, you might want to make a personal visit to talk to your child’s school. You will want to find out the school and then the particular person’s policies. Some school officials and teachers have specific times that they have an open door such as during office hours. Of course, someone else could choose to come at the same time, so if you want the person’s complete attention, you should make an appointment. You could e-mail or call to find out a time that is convenient. Make sure that you schedule enough time to address any concerns. Some schools will also set up meetings with a variety of school officials and teachers of the student at the parent’s request.
The most important thing about communicating with your child’s school is to actually do it. Many parents will start at the easiest method such as e-mail and then work their way up if the issue does not get resolved. You may also want to use that method as far as whom you contact. If your child is having a problem, then you can go to the teacher first, then the administrator for the grade, and then the principal. Try whatever method of communication works best to get your concerns addressed.
