Stockings
Of course, many people choose to hang stockings over the fireplace. This can be a very special personalized reminder of the season. There are a number you can buy or you can make one such as one that has a needlepoint on it. The children can even make them from material as a craft. You can line them up all together.
Put up pictures
The fireplace can be a nice place to put up pictures of past Christmas seasons. You can put them in little homemade frames or you can just tape them up. For instance, if you have a child, you can put up a picture for each Christmas and watch as they have grown. You can also have pictures of family times together.
Christmas lights
Many people decorate the outside of their house with lights, and this can make a great decoration for your fireplace. They have many different types. You can get clear ones that look very elegant. You can also get fun multicolor ones. Some of them do special things such as twinkle or change color.
Garland
A lot of people like to line their fireplace in garland for Christmas. It can be just the plain green garland or you can add embellishments to it such as brightly colored balls. Make sure that you latch it on securely.
Candles
A lot of people like to put candles on top of their fireplace. You can get some that are red and green to go along with the spirit of the season. They have some that are in etched glass containers, which can look very elegant.
Not everyone is comfortable with having burning candles because they are worried about kids, pets or just a fire in general. There is a great option to purchase candles that do not burn but are battery powered instead. Many of them are made with real wax, and can look very similar to real candles.
Christmas figurines
There are many figurines that you can use to decorate your fireplace. You can put up little Santa Claus figures. You can put up a little miniature Christmas village or a train.
