How to Build Communication with Family Members
It is important for family members to have good communication. Oftentimes this can help avoid small problems from turning into much larger ones. There are different methods that can foster this growth.
Set aside specific times for the family to talk
Sometimes a lack of family communication isn’t purposeful. The family might just be used to not talking. To help build communication you might want to set aside specific times that you talk. You can have everyone speak during a game night, for instance. You might want to have a weekly conversation between the family. If something big comes up, then you can make it a practice to have family meetings.
Steps should be taken to make sure that the communication within these talks allows everyone the chance to have their voice heard in a positive and non-argumentative manner. You can have a practice that everyone gets the floor for a certain amount of time without another family member interrupting them. You can even go back to your elementary school roots and have a ball passed around so that you can only speak if you are holding that. Attitudes should be left at the door, and every person’s opinion should be given due consideration. When possible, compromises should be made.
Spend quality time together
The family will often communicate better if they can spend quality time with each other. Family meals are a great way to do this.
Avoid distractions
It is important to avoid things that are hurting family communication. For instance, if a child always has a personal listening device on and doesn’t partake in any family discussions because of it, then perhaps rules should be set up as to when he should and should not be listening. If people are always texting their friends when they should be spending time talking with their family members then that can also be counterproductive. These items should be put away so that the family members can talk with each other.
Family members should be encouraged to speak their minds
There are many rifts within families. A lot of times these start from minor issues, but someone doesn’t want to make a big deal of it and thus never speaks his or her mind. The family members should adopt a rule that any concerns, no matter how small, are brought up with other members of the family so that nothing is left to fester.
Good communication between family members can help keep families strong and its members happy. The above tips can help you build this important practice.
