Being in a bad mood, by definition, is no fun. There are simple yet powerful self-help strategies that can help you overcome such a melancholy state. Consider the following ideas.
Start saying or writing down all of the good things in your life
When we are in a bad mood, we are often thinking about everything that is bad in our lives, ignoring the good. Instead try to reverse this. Take a piece of paper and start listing every good thing. You can write the names of people who are nice to you whom you are lucky to have in your life. You can write about something fun that you did or an upcoming event you are looking forward to. You can even write about things that you like to see such as a sunrise. You can also just say these to yourself. You can truly think about each one. You might find yourself feeling better in the face of all of this good. If something bad starts to creep into your mind, then banish it and force the good back in.
Call a good friend
Sometimes the best thing to do is to call a friend whom you enjoy talking to. Find someone who makes you laugh. It might feel great to reconnect with them.
Smile and laugh out loud
Even if you do not feel like it, put a smile on your face. Laugh at something. Some people find that the emotion can actually come after the action.
Read a light book or watch a funny movie
A lot of people really enjoy watching or reading something satirical or fun. Find one of your favorite things to read or watch. You might get caught up in it and find that your bad mood just disappears.
Do something good for someone else
A lot of people feel best when they have done something for someone else. It can make you feel better about yourself and raise your self-esteem. Others might appreciate it and it can help turn your bad mood into a good mood. It can even be a small gesture such as praising someone or doing a chore that was someone else’s responsibility.
Exercise or play a sport
Exercise releases helpful hormones that can make you feel happier. A fun sport can also help a lot of people.
There are many great yet simple self-help strategies that can shatter your bad mood. Consider the above ideas to help yourself.
