How to Childproof your Home
(458 Words)
Your home might seem like a safe haven, but to a young child it is fraught with danger. There are many areas that might seem benign, but which can contain hidden perils for your child. Fortunately, various child safety devices can safeguard your child.
Door knob covers
You do not want your child leaving the house in the middle of the night. Place door knob covers or hooks on your doors to prevent such an occurrence. They make different types depending on the type of knobs you possess.
Cabinet door latches
You might think the contents of your cabinets are innocuous, however many chemicals and cleaning supplies are like poison to babies and toddlers. Keep latches on all doors that contain those or other dangerous items such as sharp utensils or cooking devices. Remember that children can climb so even a high cabinet will need a latch.
Stove knob covers
Children can easily turn stove knobs, causing burns and fires. They sell clear knobs that simply snap on top of the knobs. These can be easily flipped open for use. You can also look for something that locks your oven. Many modern day ovens come with a lock feature.
Brackets for heavy objects
You may not think of your large chest of drawers as a safety hazard for children, but many pieces of furniture can easily topple over onto an unsuspecting child. Children love to climb and pull, and while a piece might be stable enough on its own, it might not take the power of a child trying to pull it down. You can secure most pieces of furniture to the wall with specially made brackets. Make sure that you purchase hardware that can handle the weight of the item. The more you reinforce, the less chance of a tragedy.
Refrigerator locks
You do not want your child climbing into your refrigerator and accidentally closing the door behind him or her. He or she could suffocate. They sell locks that allow you to lock the door securely.
Child safety gates and fences
If you have stairs, then use a child safety gate to prevent a child from accidentally falling. If you have a pool, make sure that it is surrounded by a gate.
You cannot get the benefits of these child safety devices if you do not use them. Make sure to keep latches closed and hooks up. There are many more products that can keep your child safe, from covers that go over sharp edges to toilet seat locks and more. Go around your house carefully to identify anything that might be a threat. You can also look at the safety section of a baby supply store to see all of the products available to you.
