A lot of little kids just love rainbows. One fun idea is to make a bulletin board that explores this beautiful natural phenomenon. There are different ways that you can make such a board, including the following.
Make a big rainbow on the board and use it to teach about colors
For young children just learning their colors, a rainbow bulletin board can be a great teaching tool. There are many ways that you can make a rainbow. An easy way is to use colored construction paper, to color it or to paint it. You may also be able to find a poster with them.
Another fun and educational idea is to make the rainbow be a collage of a lot of different photographs. This can be a class activity. You can give the kids magazines and scissors. You can have them cut out pictures of things that are a certain color and then sort them into the seven colors of the rainbow. If they are too young to cut then you can just give them the pictures already cut out for them to sort. You can then take these pictures and post them on the board into the shape of a rainbow. All of the red items will go together, for instance, as will the other colors. This will also teach them that certain things come in certain colors. For instance, they will get an idea that bananas are yellow and oranges are, of course, orange.
Post photographs of real rainbows
Children might enjoy seeing real rainbows. There have been many photographs of these, and some of them are simply striking. Post these up to embellish your board.
Place information about how rainbows are formed
This will be especially useful for an older child. You can go into as much detail as you want depending on their age, but you can talk about how rainbows occur and what they really are.
Show stories and myths about rainbows
For instance, you can discuss how some say a pot of gold is at the end of the rainbow. You can show how different cultures have viewed them throughout history.
Post up different rainbow colored items
To help draw the children attention to the board, you can post up items that have rainbows. You can probably find some small clothing items to post up like a shirt, hat or scarf. Look for other little items like a rainbow note pad or a rainbow pencil. You can find rainbow stickers to embellish your board.
A rainbow-themed bulletin board can teach the children about colors and provide an attractive display for your classroom. Consider the above ideas when putting together your board.
