: How to take Sedative Drugs Safely

:
(399 Words)
Sedative drugs are indicated for a variety of different conditions. Many of these over overused and abused and they can be dangerous. Consider the following tips for using these safely.
Take as directed
You will be safer when you take sedative drugs as directed by your physician. Of course there are some over-the-counter sleep aids which you can use. You should only take prescription sedatives that are prescribed to you. You should never take anyone else’s prescription, especially on this. If you try to get some through unscrupulous means, you could be hurting yourself.
Do not take it more often or for longer than indicated
There are often strict guidelines for sedative drugs as far as how often you can take them and for what duration. It is very important not to go over this. If it says four hours then be sure to wait that long. Also, most of these are not meant to be taken continuously. You can often become dependent on sedative drugs and then have trouble stopping. A lot of them will have ill effects with continuous use.
Be very careful about the activities that you do while under the sedative drugs
You may become very tired with the sedative drugs. You will need to be very careful with your activities. With a lot of them, they do not recommend that you drive or operate heavy machinery. Consider whether you will be doing anything like taking care of small children and need your full facilities. Some of them only direct you to take them if you have a full night’s sleep ahead of you.
Consider possible interactions
There are many drugs that can have potentially dangerous interactions with sedative drugs. These include prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and even alcohol and vitamins or supplements. Of course, illegal drugs can also be a problem. You must be very careful and check with your doctor before combining a sedative drug with anything else. You do not want to put yourself in a bad position.
Make sure to take the right dose
Do not take more than you are supposed to. Even if it is not working as well (which sometimes happens as you build up a tolerance) a higher dosage can be dangerous and even lethal.
If you notice any unusual side effects then tell your physician. Use that and the above tips to take sedative drugs safely.
