Postnatal depression is a far too common affliction suffered by many women. There are different factors that can influence this, and it is important to be aware of these because you may be able to prevent or at least help address it with this knowledge. Consider the following contributing factors.
Genetics/personality
This part of it you cannot change. Some women just have more of a tendency to become depressed after they have a baby. It may have to do with the hormones or other issues, but some women will never face it while others are at much more of a risk. If you tend to get depressed to begin with in your everyday life, then you might want to be more on the lookout for it, because the two factors combined might cause a problem.
The birth
Someone who had a very bad birth might feel guilt, sadness and anxiety on top of all of the other emotions they are feeling. For instance, many doctors give unnecessary c-sections today, and a lot of these can cause woman to feel much more upset. It is also major surgery that is very brutal on your body and the amount of pain as well as the resulting difficulty in taking care of yourself much less your baby might make women feel upset. Alternatively, if the woman had a great birth she might feel better about everything in general.
Someone to help you
Being the mother of a newborn is very challenging to say the least. Many women are sleep deprived with babies getting up every two to three hours to feed around the clock. They may have other jobs that they need to attend to. Some have to go back to work and feel overwhelmed with that. Of course, there are the other household duties and other responsibilities that have always been there. It can make a big difference if there is someone there to help. It can be that the spouse takes off some time to help with the baby or perhaps her mother comes to visit. If they can take over some of the duties with the baby while the mother can catch some sleep then that can make a big difference.
A good support system
This can help in different ways. First , good friends and family can give the mother people to talk to when things are going bad. It may stop them from keeping everything in. Also, her friends and family might recognize if there is the beginnings of a problem and urge her to seek help or to do something about it.
The mother’s familiarity with postnatal depression
If the mother is aware of this issue, then she might go get help when she thinks she is falling into it. Some women go on a very short time medication or therapy and feel much better. This knowledge can make them proactive.
Postnatal depression is very serious and should be addressed. The above factors may play a role in this devastating condition.
