A futon can be an extremely useful piece of furniture. Doubling as a couch and a bed, it is often used for guest rooms or for dorm rooms. There are many ways to save on this product including the following.
Purchase a simpler futon
How a futon feels is generally dependent on the mattress and not the frame. Many furniture stores will sell these two separately so you can get the more plush and comfortable mattress with even the cheapest futon frame. There are usually a wide range of frames and some are far cheaper than others. One might be made of simple metal bars whereas another might have very intricate wood. Decide what you really need and who will actually see it. For many a futon is hidden away in a guest room, usually not seen by too many people. If this is the case, then a simpler one might save you a great deal of money and be fine. You can still get the more comfortable mattress or save more by getting less of an expensive one. In addition, if you figure that you will spruce it up yourself such as putting a little decorative paint on it, then a cheap one might look just fine.
Look at less expensive stores
You will see futons at a wide variety of stores, not just furniture stores. This is a very common item. Some of the sources will definitely be cheaper than others. You could also buy the frame and mattress from two different stores if one is cheaper than others.
Look for a pre-owned futon
You might be able to pay only a fraction of the cost by purchasing a futon that was used before. You might be able to find a lot of these for sale in a place like a college town where a lot of people bought them for their dorm rooms or apartments and then need to get rid of them. They may sell them at yard sales or list them on www.ebay.com or craigslist. It might be best to look for something that is local because the shipping cost might outweigh any savings that you could realize.
There are other general strategies that can save you money on futons. You can look for sales at furniture stores like they have on holidays such as Black Friday. You can look at a clearance section such as that at City Furniture in South Florida. You can look for coupons or negotiate at the stores that will. Consider these and the above strategies to help you save on futons.
