Factors that Affect our Food Choices
The choices that people make on their food vary widely by person. Each person has different reasons for making the decisions that they make, which include the following.
Healthy eating
A lot of people look towards healthier choices. They may do this for the benefits that will keep them in better shape and let them live longer. They may have a certain condition that makes them choose certain items such as a diabetic choosing foods low in sugar, someone with hypertension choosing low sodium foods and someone with allergies choosing foods that do not contain these allergens. Others may want to lose weight and so they choose foods that are lower in calories or fat. A lot of people look to eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, which can fight serious conditions like cancer, stroke and heart disease.
The “yummy” factor
Of course, people look to the foods that they enjoy eating. There are obviously certain foods that a lot of people enjoy eating like chocolate, but there are many differing tastes that people have. A lot of people will just eat whatever they like ignoring all other consequences, whereas others are more disciplined. Also, a lot of times you can grow used to something and learn to like it.
The price
Many people would eat very differently if they had unlimited funds. You can get the same health benefits and the same sustenance for vastly different amounts of money depending on the types of food that you purchase. Many people need to make their choices based on the money available and they might choose to eat the more reasonably priced foods and treat themselves once in a while.
Other factors
There are a number of other factors that influence what we eat. A lot of people eat the same type of food that they grew up with. They might be comfortable and knowledgeable about the recipes. They may consider it comfort food since it reminds them of home. Other people make choices such as to be a vegetarian or a vegan and to avoid animals or all animal products altogether.
When people make their food choices, they often balance a lot of the above factors. For instance, a vegetarian might look for a meatless food that is healthy for them and not too expensive. Someone might choose between the healthiness and taste of a food like a dessert. The above factors are those that are commonly taken into consideration.
