Get a recommendation
You may be able to find a good electrician by getting a recommendation from someone. Ask around to people that you know and try to find someone who has used someone for a while. You might even get lucky and find an electrician that is recommended by several people. You can also try to find a professional recommendation. For instance, if you know someone who owns a business or other people in different companies you can ask whom their company uses. If they also do residential then they may be good since they are decent enough to attract a business.
Make sure that he or she is licensed
It is important to get an electrician that is licensed. There are certain things that one must be able to prove when going for the license, and he or she might be someone that is better qualified. It also may mean that he or she is more familiar with the different codes. You might get in trouble if you are caught using someone who is not licensed and you may even have to pay to get the work re-done by someone who is.
Consult with him or her
Many of the electricians will have a free consultation with you. While asking questions you might get an idea of how good he or she is. For instance, you are going to want to ask about experience. You might be more confident in someone who has worked in the field for twenty years as compared to someone who just started working full time a few months ago. You can also ask about some of his or her clients. You can ask about the specific work that you need done and try to see how knowledgeable they seem about it. You also want to ask them about timing and make sure that they will offer you a fair price for the work.
It is very important to hire a good electrician. If you pick someone and are not happy with the work that they perform then it is okay to switch to someone else. Consider the above tips to help you find such a person.
