Ways to tell your Child is Involved with a Gang

One of a parent’s worst nightmares is their child getting involved with a gang. Gangs vary greatly in how destructive they are, but in most cases they are a negative influence. The following are some ways to tell if your child is involved with such a group.
Does he or she have items with gang-related symbols or colors?
Many gangs have particular symbols. You may want to make it a point to educate yourself as to what these symbols are if you are concerned that your child is involved. If you see that your child has something with these symbols or even if he or she has written them down somewhere, then this may be an indicator. Also, some gangs have specific colors. If your child is always wearing certain colors, then it could be gang related. Of course he or she could just like that color, but it could be another piece to the puzzle.
Does he or she hang out with people in gangs?
You can tell a lot from his or her friends. It might not be a good sign if he or she is always hanging out with people you know are in gangs. You can ask around to try to find out who those people are.
Talk to the teachers or school
The school might have an idea of who is in gangs. You might be able to get an idea for them. Certainly listen if they mention this to you and do not just negate it out of hand.
They get caught in an activity related to a gang
You will want to take it very seriously if they get caught in some sort of gang related mischief. Certainly take drastic measures to find out if they get caught by the authorities. If you know they hang out where gangs do then this could be another sign.
You hear them talking about a gang
Do not ignore little signs. One might be if you hear them talking about a gang to someone else. Even if they joke about it to you, then it could be a signal.
When trying to figure out whether your child is in a gang, do not just rush to conclusions. For instance, if you find that he or she wrote a gang symbol on their notebook, then that is not 100% proof that he or she is in it, but it is something you may want to explore further. At some point you may want to ask them. Sometimes parents just assume their children will lie, but a lot of children will admit it to their parents. When you find out then take the appropriate steps to address the situation.
