How to Reduce Stress as a new Mother
(494 Words)
Being a mom is all things wonderful, however it can also be extremely stressful. It can be very difficult to handle all of the responsibilities of a new baby while being sleep deprived and losing a lot of time for yourself. Utilize the right strategies to reduce your stress.
Get as much sleep as possible
One of the main reasons new moms are so stressed is that they are simply exhausted. Babies are up all hours of the night, and if they don’t wake up you might literally have to set an alarm to wake them so that they eat. Of course you are limited by this, but you should try to get sleep when you can. For instance, although babies are up a lot at night, they will often sleep during the day. Try to take naps while they do. Also, see if your spouse or someone else can help watch them during the day so that you can get a little time to sleep.
Make some time for yourself
You want to have at least a little time for yourself. See if someone can give you a little time so that you do not have to give up everything you love. For instance, if you really like to read for 15 minutes a day, then do it. You do not want to give up every second of your life to the new baby or you will get overwhelmed.
Get help
You do not want to be all on your own when raising a baby. Do not be afraid to accept and even ask for help. You can ask loved ones such as your parents, other relatives and friends for help. If you do not have anyone nearby and you really need the help, consider hiring a mother’s helper or a babysitter who can give you the extra hands you need. This is especially important if you had a c-section or other physical complications from the birth.
Keep in touch with loved ones
You do not want to isolate yourself now that you have a baby. Even if you can only call people, do so. Some people might try not to call as much because they do not want to bother you. Tell them that it is okay to call. You can also invite people over even if you cannot yet go out to crowded places with your little one.
Try stress reduction techniques
There are different relaxation techniques that can help. You can try some meditation. You might like a warm shower.
Exercise
Exercise can help people lower their stress levels. It can also help you feel better about yourself and get back to your pre-baby body. Try to fit this in every day.
If you find that you are overwhelmed by stress, you might want to talk to your doctor or a counselor. It could be post-partum depression. Use the above techniques to lower your stress levels as a new parent.
